How it started:
The Neighbborhood Wishbook was born out of fascination, and a little boredom. I was deep in the throes of lockdown and wanted something to do that was creative and artistic. Before college, my main artistic outlet was music, I played the violin all through middle and high school, but I always felt like I experienced music differently from others. I was always more curious about the world my favorite music came from, what did that world look like? I always had this urge to capture how a song made me feel with visuals.
I was already posting on TikTok, but I didn't really start delving into curation until maybe 2021/22. Then in August of 2022, I attended in person college for the first time after completing my senior year online. 4 weeks in, I got sick with COVID and had to drop out :(. I truly believe I was on the brink between life and death. Being sick, I couldn't do much, but I did have time to devote to posting. This is what I call the golden period of my account, since I was able to post as much as my heart desired. Honestly, posting really helped me get through this era of my life, and the amount of pain I was in. I was able to focus on something that actually made me happy, all the "what if's" of my shaky health. Thankfully I am better now and attending a different university, fully online, studying something completely different! All of this to say that the Neighborhood Wishbook is a long time coming, and with the creation of this site begins a new era.
With the future of TikTok hanging in the balance of the supreme court and the techno-feudalist nature of most social platforms out there, I want the Neighborhood Wishbook to break free of all social platforms. This site is now Neighborhood HQ. I will be moving some of my previously created mood boards to pages here, as well as some new and different things in the future...
I am also a programming newbie, so this site will be slowly built out as I learn how to code, which is a challenge, but ultimately, I wanted to have a space where I have complete creative control to showcase what I want!
A note on structure...
This site will be organized in what I like to term "intuitive chronology". Where instead of everything being strict to the date and all ultra-accurate, there is some wiggle room for creativity and artistic license. For example, Vaporwave did not exist in the 80s, but it is undeniably an 80s inspired aesthetic, for the sake of simplicity, I will include Vaporwave posts within the 80s tab. Things I'm not able to categorize into a few neat decades will be under miscellaneous, until I find something else to do with them.
